YEAR 9 – THE UNSEEN SIDE OF SMOKING

 

Logistics
Some work in small groups, session lasts approximately 1 hour and requires a DVD player and Power Point facilities
 
Summary and Objectives
 
This session looks at smoking from a different angle – the history of cigarette marketing as well as the present strategies used by Big Tobacco are analysed.
 
Activities
 
*     Big tobacco strategy mind map
The students have to fill in the blanks of different mind maps to try to find out what kind of strategies would attract specific customers such as women, children or adolescents.
 
 
 
*     DVD
Big Tobacco takes advantage of innocent children : either through child labour in tobacco fields in Malawi or in Mauritius where they do not have easy access to information about the harm caused by cigarettes.
